MAY MEETING MINUTES
The May meeting of the NCFSDC was convened by President Edith Fifer at 1:00 p.m. on May 7, 2003 at The Gathering Place in Lake City, FL. Seventeen members were present along with one guest, Don Willen.
Six Studebakers were driven to the meeting. These included a 1957 Golden Hawk, a 1963 GT Hawk, a 1960 Lark convertible, a 1956 President Classic, a 1964 GT Hawk and a 1955/1953 modified Coupe.
The first order of business was to thank hosts Ernie and Dee Keith for making the arrangements for the meeting place. A round of applause expressed the club's appreciation.
President Fifer started by relating some thoughts that occurred to her during the long drive from Port Chariotte to the meeting. One of the first things that came to mind was the freedom we all enjoy in the United States and she asked that we all take a moment to think about our freedoms - our freedom to speak out and our freedom of assembly. We can get together where we want and when we want without any concerns at all. We sometimes take these freedoms for granted, but they are precious and we all should be very thankful to live in a country such as ours.
The first old business addressed was the approval of the meeting minutes from the April meeting. Derwood Thompson motioned that the minutes be approved as published in the May edition of the Hogtown Headlights and Ernie Keith seconded. The motion was approved by a unanimous voice vote.
The treasurers report was provided by Barrie Thelin. (Editors note: the report can be found on page 7 of this newsletter.)
Bill Delli, membership director, reported that 40 families with a total of 71 members had paid dues for 2003. Letters were sent to all non-renewing members, but only one reply was received. The member belonged to two clubs and decided to stay with the other club.
Danny Thomas, the manager of the NCFSDC web site reported that the site is up and going and seems to be running well. Most hits on the site are coming from the United States; however, the site also is accessed by people from Canada, Mexico, Cypress, Japan, Sweden, Austria, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Overall, people from 27 to 28 countries are accessing the site. The most prevalent. question is "Where do I find parts?" He added that anyone forgetting his or her password to gain access to the club roster should contact a club officer.
Charlotte Delli mentioned that she was using a search engine on the Intemet and found herself as a result of being a NCFSDC officer.
The meeting continued with old business. President Fifer stated that she had received an email Edward Burris concerning the NCFSDC's offer to host the 2006 Southeast Zone Meet. Mr. Burris forwarded the club's offer to Gordon Shelton. Mr. Sheldon sent documents that describe what needs to be done to host a zone meet. Charlotte Delli volunteered to make copies for distribution at the next club meeting. She also offered to graph the timelines for completing all of the tasks that have to be done and bring it to the next meeting. She will put an article which summarizes the documents provided by Mr. Sheldon in the next newsletter.
President Fifer noted that the club's calendar in the Hogtown Headlights was almost filled for club events in 2003. December for the Christmas party is the only meeting open. It was decided to retain September 7, 2003 for the mystery meeting that had to be rescheduled from March.
The June meeting will be held at Anastasia -State Park near St. Augustine, FL. The meeting will be hosted by the Northeast Florida Chapter SDC. Many hotels available if some want to spend the night. Stephen Cade stated that if anyone wanted to caravan to Anastasia from Gainesville, they should meet at 10:00 a.m. on June 7th at the Putnam Mall. Putnam Mall is located at the intersection of Highway 100 and State Road 26.
The car show/cruise-in to be sponsored by the NCFSDC was the first item of new business to be discussed. It can be held at Sandy's Place on 34 th St in Gainesville, FL. The only restriction is that it not be held on a Gator football weekend. Early October would be a good time. Stephen Cade will followup with dates and arrangement.
Stephen Cade sadly announced that Paul White, Orlando Chapter SDC, died. President Fifer will send the club's condolences. Danny Thomas will obtain an address for her.
President Fifer announced that Dee and Ernie Keith had participated in a car show at the Pioneer Days in High Springs, FL the day before. Even though there was not a Studebaker class, their Studebaker won the best classic car award.
Roger Thelin introduced a related topic-the celebration of the centennial first flight in Kitty Hawk, NC. It will be re-enacted on December 17, 2003. There is a five-day entrance fee of $20 or a one-day fee for each day of $5.00. It is sponsored by Ford Motors which also -is celebrating a 100th milestone for the Model T. Anyone who is interested should make arrangements now. Go to web site http:/www.firstflightcentennial.com for more information.
The last item of new business was introduced by President Fifer. She thought the NCFSDC should grant a lifetime honorary membership to any active member who celebrated his or her 75th birthday. Roger Thelin motioned that an "honored" membership category be established for those active members who turn 75 years of age. Ernie Keith seconded. The motion was approved by a unanimous voice vote. It was agreed that the honored membership category would start in 2004 for any active member and/or spouse who celebrates a 75th birthday in 2004. Charlotte Delli will draft a proposed amendment to the club's By-laws and bring it to the next meeting for members to consider.
With all business finished, the meeting was adjourned.
